Obituary for Chip Merrithew

MOREAU

James “Chip” W. Merrithew, 86, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 21, 2019 with his loving wife by his side.

Born March 14, 1933 in Warrensburg, NY, he was the son of the late Floyd and Beatrice (Stone) Merrithew.

Chip proudly served his country in the United States Air Force in the Korean War from 1952-1956 where he was a tailgunner on a B36. He earned the National Defense Service Medal.

On December 26, 1953, while Chip was on leave, he married the love of his life, Donna Smith, in South Glens Falls, NY.

He was employed by Finch Pruyn as a foreman, retiring in 1993 after 36 years of service.

Chip was extremely proud to be a blood donor who selflessly gave enough gallons of blood to save the lives of close to 600 others. He was an unofficial 46’er, a member of the Tirell Pond Hunting Club, and also enjoyed bowling and coaching. Chip was an avid Denver Broncos fan. He also volunteered at Bingo and was very active in the Moreau Community Center. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, and could often be found cheering for his grandchildren at all of their sporting events.

In addition to his parents, Chip was predeceased by his sister, Nellie Ramsey.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Donna Merrithew, his son Steven Merrithew (Kathleen), his son Ronald Merrithew (Marlo), his son Roger Merrithew, his daughter Lisa Marcellus, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nephews.

At Chip’s request there will be no calling hours, and services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

Memorial donations in Chip’s name can be made to the Moreau Community Center, 144 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
