Obituary for MacAvoy A. "Mac" Pendergrass

MacAvoy A. “Mac” Pendergrass, 99, passed away in his 100th year of life on Friday, February 1, 2019, at Fort Hudson Nursing Home in Fort Edward, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 25, 1919, in St. Petersburg, FL, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mabel (Inman) Pendergrass.
Mac graduated from Argyle High School in 1937. He always thought it was very special that he was a part of the last graduating class in the “Old Apartment School”.
On September 5, 1947 MacAvoy married Rosemary MacMorris at the South Argyle United Presbyterian Church. They spent 68 years together until her passing on March 10, 2016. Mac was a member of the Argyle Presbyterian Church for 85 years. He served as custodian and two terms as an Elder and as a Trustee.
Mac worked for 70 years at Argyle Central School. He started out working with the general contractor on the original Argyle Central School building as a Timekeeper and Paymaster. Over the years, Mac held many positions at the school, but his most recent job title was Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. Working for Argyle Central School was never just a job to Mac, it was his passion, he loved all the staff and students. Mac had the ACS yearbook dedicated to him in 1972 and 1985. Mac was made an honorary member of the Argyle Chapter of the National Honor Society in 1987. He was honored on Nov. 19, 2008 at a ceremony at which the school’s courtyard was dedicated to him-MacAvoy “Mac” Pendergrass Courtyard. In addition, Mac was well known for his painting and wallpapering. He was a member of the J.A. Barkley Hose Company No. 1 in Argyle since the 1950’s. While at Fort Hudson, he still got to enjoy coffee with the “Old Argyle Firemen”.
He enjoyed bowling, coin and stamp collecting and crossword puzzles. Mac loved children and delighted in giving them candy on Halloween, Christmas and Easter. Mac was a patron of Zack’s Texas Hot Dogs; he never missed the grand opening of each season since 1944. He also enjoyed going to Pleasant Valley Infirmary (Washington Center) on Mondays to help with BINGO.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mac was predeceased by his siblings, Louise Fleeman, Kathryn McDougall, Mabel Bain, Marjorie Hill, Betty Dean, Arthur, Coleman, Morris and Robert Pendergrass.
Left to cherish his memory include his children; Thomas Pendergrass (Anne) of Chestertown, John Pendergrass (Lisa Burns) of Wilmington, NC, Peter Pendergrass (Teri) of Greenwich, Philip Pendergrass (Linda) of Firestone, CO, and Mary Beth Jones of Argyle, his grandchildren; Sean Pendergrass (Katherine), Alison Santiago, Andrew Pendergrass (Michelle), John Pendergrass (Lauren), Patrick Pendergrass, Keith Pendergrass (Taylor Kalloch), Joshua Pendergrass, Tyler Pendergrass, Felicity Jones (Mike), Lydia Jones, and Thaddeus Jones, his great-grandchildren; Amanda and Thomas Pendergrass, Henry and Samuel Pendergrass, Aidan and Emma Santiago, and Marisa, Jaiden and Hunter Pendergrass; his brother-in-law, John Alexander MacMorris (Edna) of Summerfield, FL and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Mac’s request there will be no calling hours.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 3pm on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at the Argyle Central School with the Rev. Stephen McLean, pastor of Argyle Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Burial will be at 4 pm on Monday, May 20, 2019 at South Argyle Cemetery.
