Obituary for Raymond Francis Burlett

South Glens Falls/ Debary, FL

Raymond Francis Burlett Sr., 78, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 8, 2019, surrounded by his family in Central Florida Regional Hospital.

Born on January 16, 1941, in Miami, FL, he was the son of the late Cassius and Marian (Knapp) Burlett.

Raymond graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1959. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served from 1959 until 1970.

On June 29, 1963, Raymond married the love of his life, Lynn Elizabeth O’Leary, at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson Falls.

During his 12 years in the Navy, Raymond trained as a Nuclear Power Electrician. He served on the USS Norfolk in Virginia and on the USS Bainbridge; the first ship to go to war as a Nuclear Power Destroyer. He was proud to have gone around the world twice with the Bainbridge and loved to tell stories of his travels to the major ports in the world. His time served was a great honor in his life; a calling he imparted to his granddaughter Victoria.

Following his time in the Navy, he became an electrician at Patrician Paper, retiring from SCA Tissue in 2002. Raymond also served as a volunteer firefighter with the South Glens Falls Fire Department. He was a proud member of the Eagles club in South Glens Falls, serving as Vice President for the last two years.

Raymond enjoyed two step dancing, golfing and NASCAR; wherever he was on a Sunday, the race was sure to be on. His beloved dog Gretchen kept him company for many years; riding alongside him in his truck for their daily trips to the river. Raymond also loved camping, which he did for many years with his family and great friends at Fish Creek. From his morning coffee with the boys, to his afternoons at the Eagles club; his friendships were a big part of his life. Every winter for the past 17 years, Raymond, Lynn “Lizabeth” and his beautiful red trike would leave for Debary, Fl. The months spent there with their winter family were full of socializing, afternoons at the VFW, happy hours and road trips on the trike.

Raymond loved his family dearly and was proud of his two children, Deb and Ray Jr. “Pop” was always the center of attention when he was with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; all of whom doted on him. During every family gathering, he took credit for everything and admitted to nothing. Often, his invisible friend ‘little bastard’ was the one he blamed.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his brother, Tommy Tatsey
and his favorite dog, Gretchen.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Lynn; his children, Debra (Vincent) Shay, Raymond (Valerie) Burlett Jr.; his grandchildren, Jessica (John) Casey, Kayla Mound, Victoria Burlett, Olivia Burlett, Oliver Caron and Nora Caron; his great-grandchildren, John Eggleston, Layna Sheppard and Brennan Casey; his siblings, Cassie Rotman, Jean Burlett and John (Carol) Tatsey; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 4 to 6pm on Monday, February 18, 2019, at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

A Funeral Service will be conducted following the calling hours at 6pm at the funeral home.
